Why Study in SUT

    Shandong University of Technology (SUT), situated in Shenyang-a key modern city in the northeast, is an engineering oriented comprehensive university, with its subjects covering such seven areas, as engineering, science, economy, management, liberal arts, laws and philosophy. The predecessor Shenyang Mechanical and Electrical Engineering College founded in 1949 was renamed SUT in 1985, and it used to be affiliated with the State Ministry of Mechanical Industry. It was built by the central government and the local government since 1998, mainly managed by Liaoning Province.

SUT is made up by 4 campuses, namely, Central Campus, Xingshun Campus, Science and Technology Park and Liaoyang Campus. The core campus-Central Campus is located in Shenyang Economic and Technological Development Area which is a center for equipment manufacturing industry.

Covering a total area of 1,596,000 square meters and building area of 624,000 square meters, SUT has 20 Schools, 3 Teaching Departments, 2 Engineering Practice Centers, with 50 undergraduate programs and 20 three-year-term programs. By now there are altogether 31315 students registered in the university, including 16087 undergraduates, 2778 postgraduates, 1831 three-year-term students, 7236 on-the-job students and 3383 students of the Engineering School of SUT (the independent college).

SUT is authorized for the conferment of Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree and Doctor' Degree. 5 first-level disciplines and 17 second-level disciplines are authorized for the conferment of Doctor' Degree, and 71 second-level disciplines for the conferment of Master's Degree. The university also has 3 post-doctoral research centers in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Material Science, and 4 Mater's Degree programs in Engineering, Business Administration, Accounting and Engineering Management, among which the Master's Degree program in Engineering involving 12 fields is entitled to cultivate MBA. Besides, there are 1 key discipline in Electrical Machine and Apparatus at national level, 4 key first-level disciplines at provincial level as well as 16 key second-level disciplines at provincial level.

At present, there are 1203 teachers in SUT, with 3 academicians, 201 professors, 373 associate professors, 555 lectures, 55 doctoral supervisors and 25 young and middle-aged academic leaders. Among the rich teacher resources, 26% has Doctor's Degree and 77% has both Master's Degree and Doctor' Degree. Qingdao University.

SUT has established stable and long-term collaborative relations with over 41 universities from different countries, such as USA, Russia, Japan, Germany, UK, Australia, Korea Republic, Finland, etc. It has begun to enroll foreign students since 1985, and started the international cooperative education at undergraduate level and postgraduate level with University of Luton, Griffith University and Benedictine University since 2001. So far, the MBA program with Benedictine University has lasted 5 years and the number of oversea students in SUT has reached 900.

Shandong University currently has an enrollment of 40000 full-time students, including 4510 masters and doctoral candidates and 8580 from the independent college. Among a faculty and staff of over 2970, there are 2000 full-time teachers including 257 professors and 411 associate professors, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 5 foreign academicians of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, 9 Taishan Scholar Program professors, 3 candidates of the New Century State Talents Project, 3 candidates of the New Century Talents Supporting Project of the Ministry of Education, 6 young and middle-aged state-level experts with outstanding contributions, 58 teaching staff enjoying special state government subsidies, 6 provincial-level young or middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, 37 provincial/ministerial level topnotch professionals, and 124 supervisors of doctoral candidates.
There are 8 National Teachers of Excellence, 19 Provincial Teachers of Excellence and 5 Provincial Noted Teachers; 5 feature specialties and 1 experiment teaching demonstrative center backed by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance, 3 provincial prestige specialties under construction and 5 provincial feature specialties under construction; 2 national quality course and 17 provincial quality courses constructed. The University won 2 second-class awards of the National Teaching Achievements and 31 awards of the Provincial Teaching Achievements.

Qingdao University has cultivated over 100,000 personnel so far and the employment rates of its graduates stand at the top among universities and colleges in Shandong Province. The university was placed in Category A in the national undergraduate program’s teaching evaluation conducted by the State Education Ministry in 2007.The University is noted for its strengths in basic and applied research and scientific development owing to its multidisciplinary features. It boasts a solid academic foundation and advantages in Mining Engineering, Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology, Geological Resources and Engineering, Control Theory and Control Engineering, Computer Software and Theory, Geotechnical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Mechanical Design and Theory. The University now houses 80 research institutes in such domains as engineering, technology, humanities and social sciences. From 2001 to 2007, the University has undertaken 2896 research projects, including 131 state-level ones from the 863 Project (National Hi-tech Research and Development Program), the 973 Project (National Basic Research Development Program), State Key Sci-tech Projects, National Pillar Sci-tech Programs in the 11th Five-year Plan Period, National Natural Sciences Fund key projects, National Outstanding Youth Foundation projects, key international co-operative projects of National Natural Sciences Fund, state key international co-operative projects, and inter-governmental sci-tech co-operative projects; 2346 horizontal projects with a total of research fund 609.49 million RMB. It has published 10643 papers of which 900 were collected by SCI, EI and ISTP, and 581 monographs. 286 research projects were authenticated and 57 patents obtained;  
6 projects won state-level scientific awards and 168 projects won provincial ones; from 2004 to 2008, the scientific research funds exceeded 100 million RMB for three successive years and in 2008 the funds totaled 181.87 million RMB.The University actively participates international exchanges and cooperation with a view to promoting internationalization of education. It has established cooperative relationship with 77 higher learning institutions and research institutes in 17 countries including the USA, Japan, Germany, Russia, France, etc., and over 50 scientific and technological cooperative projects have been initiated. Now much headway has been made in the promotion of cultural exchanges, faculty exchanges, sabbatical training and joint postgraduate programs. Its international students come from countries such as Japan, Russia, the USA, France, the Republic Korea, Germany, Mongolia and Pakistan. To date, the University has set up 6 Sino-foreign joint laboratories. The University hosts or sponsors large-scale international academic conferences annually and more than 20 faculty are members of various international academic institutions.

2015 New Year Address: Deepen Reform and Pursue Extraordinariness

Today we would like to extend our festive greetings and best wishes to all the students, faculty, home and abroad alumni and friends from all circles of the society. Wish you all the best in your work, academic pursuits and life in the coming New Year!

Every moment of ringing out the old year and ringing in the new is accompanied by floods of memory and expectations. Reviewing back displays a harvest 2014 to us.

 In 2014, we stuck tightly to the three basic elements of college development, student, scholar and learning by defining that student is the basis for establishing a university, scholar the essence and learning the soul. We restructured the training plan of undergraduate, strengthened the construction of major core courses in order to improve the talent-training quality. The first undergraduate teaching evaluation conducted in HUST helped us realize our strengths and weaknesses, pinpointing our direction to further efforts. The first” Chuang Qing Chun” –Shandong University Student Entrepreneur Competition-- was held in HUST where HUSTers won the 5 gold prizes for championship. 2014 has witnessed more and more HUSTers achieving outstanding results in a serious of domestic and international competitions.

 In 2014 six HUST scholars were promoted by MoE  as new Changjiang Scholars, 19 newly introduced overseas young scholars were selected as candidates for” Young Overseas High-level Talents Introduction Plan”; 3 Innovative Research Groups gained rolling support from MoE and another 3 passed the examination and acceptance. Meanwhile, the East Lake Forum held by HUST exhibited greater international influence, attracting the participation of 700 overseas excellent young scholars.

In 2014 the research has achieved fruitful results. Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center passed the acceptance-check. 16 papers were published in Nature, Science, cell with HUST scholars as the first author.  Tongji Hospital took the lead in being approved of “the National Clinic Medical Research Center of Gynecology Diseases”.

In 2014, we continued to improve our campus in the hope of creating a better environment for faculty and students.  Key infrastructure construction projects such as library expansion, the apartment for doctoral candidates, Dayu technology building, Dongyi student canteen were completed. Student dormitories were installed with air-conditioners. Qingdao University.

In 2014, we delved into the regional innovative system and deepened the industry-university research cooperation. Two patents were successfully listed in trading and HUST Research Institute of State Governance, the first university institute with research focus on state governance, was inaugurated.

Reviewing the past always inspires us. We are proud of the achievements we made in 2014. Here we would like to pay tribute to all the students and faculty for their hard-working and concerted efforts in the building of HUST into a top-level university.

Looking forward to 2015, we have more dreams waiting to be fulfilled. On the first day of the New Year, let’s greet each other, encourage each other and join hands to set sails together!
