China Today

For foreigners, China’s booming economy and lengthy history may be the most frequently heard phrases, however, what it will be if you decide to experience four-year study in this mysterious and most populous country?
The first few weeks you will find that China is really massive and huge. Also, China turns out to be a lot different from your country, which may cause you a little headache. However, after staying in China for a bit longer time, you will love this country and never regret living in this dynamic and vibrant country.
An Economy with Fast Growth
As for the economy of China, it is believed that during the previous 30 years, China has enjoyed the world’s quickest economic growth rate with annual average growth rate maintained at a level of 9%. Even during the global financial crisis in 2009, its economy was still among the first in the world to rebound, quickly returning to growth.

The promising domestic market and stable investment environment make China an attractive land for foreign companies. Most top 500 companies do business with China, with many choosing to base their Asia-Pacific headquarters in the bustling Chinese cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai or Beijing. For international students who are studying in China, it is possible for them to hunt a job in famous foreign companies.
Recently, the emergence of the economic and technical development zones not only demonstrates the economic strength of today’s China but also brings more opportunities to foreigners for investing and project researching. The most renowned ones are the Dalian Economic and Technical Development Zone, Shanghai Minhang Economic and Technological Development zone and Suzhou Industrial Park etc. These zones are all open for students to visit and
study in China.
However, with no exception, the economy of China develops unevenly by region. For example, cities like Beijing, Shanghai have higher living costs and more pressure to find a job while smaller cities like Dalian, Qingdao and Shenyang have lower costs and less pressure to find a job. See Chinese Cities and living costs
Splendid History and Culture

Known as the “giant dragon in the east’, China is the world’s most populous country with a lengthy culture stretching back nearly 5,000 years. Be abundant of tangible treasures like the Forbidden City and Great Wall as well as intellectual works including Chinese Calligraphy and various Local Operas, China is reputed for its cultural heritage. When China steps into the new century and begins to play a vital role in the world stage, there has been a revival of interest in ancient Chinese civilization: Confucian philosophy, the Four Great Inventions, the flourishing Tang dynasty, etc.
Still, how much does modern China inherit from its 5000 year-old civilization? As China focuses on economic development and modernization, this question may be a little contradictory to answer.
In China, many cities which are dotted with splendid traditional Chinese architecture are much modernized now. In Beijing, for instance, you are confused about the mixed city sights when first settling down. Beijing is a mix of tradition and modernization. Only when you are surrounded by Hutongs will you find the traces of old Beijing stories. Admittedly, Chinese cities with ancient cultural heritage are in fast changes, bringing people more convenient life and meanwhile vanishing lots of good old days.
But, luckily, the essential part of Chinese culture has never been changed.  In line with Confucian teaching, Chinese culture still attaches great importance on education. Chinese government has put huge money on the career of higher education, to ensure the quality of universities, to elevate the level of faculty and to create more relaxed environment of education so that China can face all the challenges of the 21st century.
A Large Population Base
Shandong University
In the Chinese geography book for middle school students, China is often described as “a country with a vast territory and a large population base”. Indeed, 1.3 billion might sound like a “terrifying” number, whereas Chinese People are just like any nation in the world. They possess the same hope and deal with the same problem. You may hear that Chinese people are getting rich now and China is a paradise to foreigners. It is true that China has developed very well and living in China is rather comfortable especially in some costal cities. However, Chinese people are answering the same questions as any other people in the world: Competitions are getting fierce for the college graduates. The price of apartments is rising and couples have to work hard to save money for it.Parents spend a considerable part on the education of their kids.

So how can a foreigner cope with the fitting-in issue? Is it easy for a foreigner to live with almost 1.3 billion people? Upon your arrival, you may encounter the locals who speak little English but want to communicate with you, just be patient and you will find actually Chinese people are very friendly and what they want is only to help you. Sometimes people may act too friendly so that you feel it difficult to cope with. However, this is exactly the way Chinese treat a foreign guests. Remember in China, accepting kindness is really important. Maybe, some other people may feel frustrated when dealing with a problem involved with a foreigner, and then you are advised to be patient enough or to bring a Chinese friend when you need to be understood.

A Country with Diversity and Mystery

Just browse the map of China, you will find China is very big and vast, which makes it a perfect place for travelling and studying. As the third largest nation in the world, China occupies a tremendous regional diversity ranging from terrain, weather to culture, language and food. Every year, many foreigners come to China to tour and explore this mysterious country. When you study in China, don’t forget to do a long trip during your summer and winter holidays, which is not only a good experience but also a great chance to explore this diversified, interesting country and appreciate featured sceneries along the trip.

Chengdu Attracts IT Giants

Four years after setting up a manufacturing site in Chengdu, Texas Instruments, the world's largest semiconductor company, already considers the city its strategic focus in China.
TI announced it will expand its manufacturing capacity in Chengdu with a 300 mm wafer bumping facility, at the Nov 6 opening ceremony for its seventh assembly and testing facility. That 33,260-square-meter facility in Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone is now in production.
TI has manufacturing operations throughout the world. Its 300 mm operations include the industry's first 300 mm analog wafer fabrication plant in Richardson, Texas, as well as a DMOS6 wafer fab in Dallas and bump operations in the Philippines and Dallas.

The company entered the Chinese market 28 years ago. Its manufacturing investment in China began in 2010 with the opening of a 200 mm wafer fabrication plant in Chengdu. The company chose Chengdu to set up its manufacturing base in China because the city plays an irreplaceable role in China's western development strategy, and the local government offers a good investment environment and services.
Chengdu has 52 universities, including Sichuan University, Qingdao University, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, and Southwest University for Nationalities, with a total of 686,000 students enrolled. It is also home to 30 State-level research institutes, 10 key national laboratories and some 100 vocational and technical colleges.
Many other IT giants have invested in Chengdu and the Chengdu High-tech Comprehensive Bonded Zone is home to a number of leading IT companies, including Intel, Dell, Lenovo, Foxconn and Molex.

The Chengdu Tianfu Software Park has also attracted more than 400 companies, including IBM, GE, SAP, NEC, Philips, Siemens and Ericsson.

Forty percent of those companies are foreign-invested and 33 are Fortune 500 companies.
Since semiconductor giant Intel Corp set up a chip packaging and testing factory in the city in 2003, Chengdu has become a magnet for international IT companies.
Intel Group in Chengdu
It is widely considered the fourth pole of China's IT industry, after Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, producing half of the world's laptop chips and two thirds of the iPads.
The Michelin Group, another Fortune 500 company and a world leader in tire technology and innovation, also attaches great importance to Chengdu.
The group recently held a global event — the 12th Michelin Challenge Bibendum — in Chengdu. It was the third time the event was held in China but the first time in western China.
Jean-Dominique Sénard, CEO of the Michelin Group said, "We already have factories in cities like Shenyang, Shanghai, and Anhui province. If we are to build a company in western China, Chengdu would be the first choice."
Welcome to study in China.

SICAS Realized My Dream to Study MBBS in China

I am Yastiel Sook from India. I heard SICAS from my friend Tania Inez . He is a second year student in Weifang Medical University. He told me that service in SICAS is professional and quickly.

I called SICAS on the evening of 25th September, a girl answered my phone quickly. She told me that she was a new editor and the student advisers were off work. She wrote down my name and phone number carefully and wished me good night. The next morning one of their adviser called Yoyo phoned back. I told her I would like to study MBBS in China Capital Medical University in this Autumn . Yoyo explained that the seat in that school is full and the application system has already closed. I felt a little frustrated.

However, there are still some good news. Yoyo provided me two choices. I can apply for Capital Medical University in Spring of 2014 or I can apply for another school which is still available in 2013 instead. She suggested me to apply for Liaoning Medical University in Jinzhou or Shenyang Medical University in Shenyang. I really want to study in this year and I like the city Shenyang so I choose Shenyang Medical University.

Under Yoyo`s help, I filled up the application system and finished it in four steps. Yoyo kept in touch with me after that. In 2nd October, I got a call from Yoyo, she told me that I was accepted by Shenyang Medical University. I was very excited and said many thanks to her warm-hearted help.

Now I am preparing my study in China. If I got a chance, I would like to thank her face to face

After admission Sicas helped me with my JW-202(Visa Application) and posted the original papers to me via DHL. All this was done with the help of my Sicas

A Happy Reunion of Anna and Monde Sisters in China

(Editor's note: Monde is admitted by South China University of Technology and reached China today. SICAS student service member Michael along with Monde’s sister Anna who also came to study in this university last year through SICAS went to the airport to pick up Monde. It was a happy reunion. We heard the details of the story from Michael. Now let’s share this joy together.)

Anna and Monde meeting in Guangzhou Airport
It’s a beautiful day, especially for Anna and Monde sisters. Both of them have been looking forward to this day since Anna came to study in China University of Technology last year. Two days before, we finally got the exciting news that Monde was arriving in China at three o’ clock this afternoon.

Early before two o’ clock, Anna and SICAS student service member Michael had already on the subway to the airport, since Anna was too excited to wait. She even talked excitingly with a Chinese passenger on the subway which was not quite like her as usual.

They had been waiting in the airport for almost one hour before Mon des flight arrived. It was a very emotional scene when the sisters met each other. Even our big guy Michael said that he was moved to tears. Monde was so thoughtful that she even prepared a present for her elder sister.
Now, with the help of Michael, Anna and Monde have been arranged in the same room in the university apartment. Qingdao University.
SICAS wishes both of them to have an unforgettable journey in China.

Glimpse on My Life in China

Why I choose China. My name is Ahmed. I am an Arabian from the Republic of Yemen at the south of Arabic Peninsula at the western part of Asia. China was my choice for futher education after finishing my high school study because I wanted to know more about the culture, the people and the language as well. At that time I didn't have much knowledge about this mysterious country except it was big and powerful. It wasn't a long time since it's established and it's now one of the greatest developing countries in the world. In my country many Chinese people work in Chinese companies in different fields such as Yemen hospitals as doctor specialized in Chinese medicine for many people like to take their treatments. So Yemen government and Chinese government have a very good cooperation since decades ago. Chinese government supports Yemen development. There are around 40 Yemeni students who come to china every year as an education exchange program for bachelor degree or further studies in the mainland of China.
My first experience study in China
I came to China in September, 2012. At that time I didn't know even a word of Chinese except ''nihao'' which means hello. I could not handle or achieve anything unless a friend of mine who understands Chinese very well interprets for me. I realized how important it was to learn Chinese. Before I came here I never thought that there are other people except Chinese who can speak Chinese very well. In my eyes Chinese characters are just like drawings that only an artist can handle. But when I saw my county-mates can speak it very well, I seemed to have hope that I can learn it well just as they did. I still remember that something happened on my way to Harbin Institute of Technology. At that time my partner and I couldn't speak any Chinese and also we couldn't find anyone for help. No one told us at which stop we should get off. My friend had an Arabian book which were translated into Chinese. Using that book we started a kind of conversation with people on that train. They pointed to the question they wanted to ask like ''where are you from?'' and I looked for the answer in the book so he could see the translation.
Food for Islam Qingdao University
The year for the Chinese language learning was the most difficult but most interesting as well. This language is regarded as the most difficult in the world. We had to get used to many things totally different from my home country, such as the food. Islam is the religion that 95% of Arabs believe in. It's prohibited for Islam believers to eat pork or any kind of meat unless it's slaughtered by a Muslim believer and Islam cannot drink any kind of wine or even beer. Most of the Chinese people are not religious believers so they don't have to be bothered by this. So if I wanted to eat in any Chinese restaurant, it was very difficult to find the dish I could eat. Fortunately I found later that some people, called ''Huizu'', who are from minority nationality and Islam as well, run their own restaurants. Even the dining hall of our school has a special sector for people like me. They cook dishes I can eat. That helps a lot in solving this problem.
I have been in China for 2 years now and still have so many things about the Chinese Cultures that I could not understand. I think to study any other language one important thing is to study their culture as well, because in that way I can understand the language better and even more I can understand the way they think since everyone has its way in thinking and dealing for other people which is caused by his background and the environment he was raised in.

My MBBS Dream, My Study-in-China Story

(Editor’s note: Pasha was accepted in program MBBS by Shenyang Medical College through SICAS this September. It’s his dream to study MBBS in China. Let’s read his study-in-China story together.)

Recent Photo of Pasha (provided by himself)
First and foremost, I would like to say thank you to SICAS for making my application to study in China possible.

How I Knew SICAS.

Before I got to know SICAS, I had made a lot of applications which did not turn out successful. I was almost losing hope, when I finally stumbled upon SICAS after typing a random search term ‘study in china’ in Google search engine. At first, I did not plan to follow through with the applications online, because I had doubts about online transactions. Nevertheless, I decided to sign up, and in just a short space of time, I received a message from one of SICAS advisor William (Very friendly person I should say). To cut the story short, the admission process was taken over by SICAS, all I had to do was just send them my documents and the rest is history.

My application.

After my application was completed. I received my pre-admission notice from Shenyang Medical College Shandong University in just a few weeks, I must confess though, that it took some time for me to receive my admission notice, it arrived 3 days before the deadline date. Nevertheless, when I received my admission, my parents were excited they even sent an appreciation message to my advisor. I realized later after I came to China that, actually it was just the university which delayed the application. As I am writing this, there are still some student’s due to arrive for our batch this December. I guess am even lucky I made it before any classes commenced.
Life in China.
Life in China is awesome. The institution I am at is awesome, it has a very good library and a lot of good classes also. I have only been here for just a few months but the experience is great.
Once again I would like to thank SICAS and the entire crew including William my advisor for making it possible for me to come study in China. I would definitely recommend SICAS to every international student who wishes to study in China. IT IS EFFICIENT, ACCURATE AND RELIABLE. IT IS SICAS.

English-medium MBBS in China

MBBS is the most popular degree-course for international students studying in China. The official figures show that in 2010, around 15 percent of 265,090 international students who study in China take English-medium MBBS courses

Many of China’s medical schools have a high prestige among international students for the rich experience in MBBS teaching, abundant educational resources and reliable affiliated hospitals. Chinese Medical schools are all authorized by Medical Council of China and are on the list of "Directory of World Medical Schools" by the World Health Organization (WHO).The medical degree bestowed by Chinese medical schools is valid throughout the world and eligible for the USMLE in US, the PLAB in UK, the MCI Screening test in Indian and the PMDC in Pakistan, etc.

What is the MBBS program like in China?

The English- medium
MBBS in China lasts for five to six years. Students are required to complete 3-4 years’ basic education and then do normally one-year internship, either in the university’s affiliated hospitals or in hospitals in your home country as well as in other countries. The length of the internship depends on the specific requirements of each medical school.

Universities may have different requirements for applicants such as educational background, scores in science subjects and English language proficiency for those who aren’t English native speakers. In addition, international students are required to pass the HSK test (Chinese language proficiency) before graduation by many of the medical schools in China. The required level of HSK may vary according to the respective universities.
Medical schools in China have designed mature monitoring systems to evaluate the performance and progress of the foreign students in mastering the subjects. Weekly tests, midterm examination and final examination are taken every academic year according to the strictly formulated assessment manual. Generally speaking, the final grade is composed of the daily performance (30%), attendance (10%), and final exam (60%). You will get the credit if your final grade is over 60. Treated equally in China’s universities, foreign students should comply with all the rules and regulations of the universities as Chinese students. Besides, students have to take the final exam on Theory Test and Clinical Evaluation after the internship.
Usually, the expenses for internal students studying in China are reasonable. Different universities have different regulations for the tuition fees and living expenses standards.

Check the tuition fee lists (Fees and scholarships) of medical schools in China
Today, with issuing of China’s National Outline for Medium and Long Term Educational Reform and Development as well as the Study in China Plan, Chinese government is creating a better political and cultural environment for international students to study MBBS in China. In addition, the Chinese Ministry of Education has published a quality control regulation on medical education (“Circular of the Ministry of Education On Interim Provisions for Quality Control Standards on Undergraduate Medical Education in English for International Students in China”) to strengthen management and to upgrade education quality of medical schools in China. Studying MBBS in China will be a professional, clever choice rather than only a trend.
